Fatty Crab

Fatty Crab is indeed fatty, delicious and worth a visit. My sous chef told me she loved everything she ate, but felt that certain dishes were "messy." She wasn't mistaken. She also recommended a dish that while it may make certain veggie people cower, any bacon lover will be in immediate bliss. So I ventured to the FC ready to get my hands dirty and chow on some Malaysian inspired food by Zac Pelaccio of 5 Ninth. The interior is tiny, maybe 30 seats and crammed together. It's in a word... intimate. The bathroom, on the other hand, is so spacious that I feel like they could have saved some nose-powdering space and moved the tables a bit more apart. The actual tables are small, considering the tapas size plates and the encouraged sharing. Aside from these complaints, the food shines. Watermelon Pork and Crispy Bacon is a meat lover's salad dream. Large chunks of ripe watermelon share a plate with 2-inch cubes of crispy bacon. The bacon melts in your mouth while the watermelon offers a refreshing respite to the caloric treat. We also ordered Short Rib Rendang which arrived as a threesome hanging over the tiny plate. The ribs were sweet, salty without a hint of gamey-ness. Our final selection was a bit of a disappointment: Seared Cod on a bed of coconut broth and rice noodles. While everything was cooked perfectly, there was not enough salt on the fish or in the soup to make this dish taste like anything. Half way through our meal, I noticed that hidden beneath the dish was a small bowl of hot sauce. This helped, but it no way did it add the seasoning that the cod desperately needed...and would have made this dish delicious, rather than ho-hum. I even mentioned to the server that the dish was under-salted and after speaking with the chef they told me they would totally revamp the delivery of the dish. After my comment, all future diners would be told if they didn't like hot sauce, to order fish sauce instead to season the dish. 10 Points Food Nerds!

Taking into account the limited size of one's table, oversized items on small dishes and sharing..I was a mess, so was my shirt, face and hands. I didn't mind...perhaps that's why the bathroom is so large, so you can hose yourself down after your meal. Our bill came with coconut mochi, that my date told me was just ok. So if you go, wear that rubber shirt, choose a date that you don't mind getting close to, and remember that if you get the Cod and they tell you how to season it properly, thank a food nerd.
